The Effect of the Röntgen Rays on Calculi

چکیده

The great difficulty of distinguishing nephro-lithiasis from many other pathological conditions of the genito-urinary tract ?especially early tubercular disease of the kidney?is well known; but, except in the case reported below, the Rontgen rays have not yet proved of much practical value in the diagnosis of renal calculus.1 It can be, however, only a matter of time; and there is little doubt that a more extended knowledge of the methods now employed will enable us to graphically prove the existence of calculi not only in the kidney, but also in the urinary bladder,2 gall-bladder, and intestine. Meanwhile, it may be profitable to consider the behaviour of calculi outside the body when exposed to the X rays, as Mr. Morris3 has already done to some extent. 1 Lancet, 1896, ii. 1631. 2 Ibid., 1897, i. 169. 3 Ibid., 1896, ii. 1367.

Some Facts about X-Rays

X-rays were discovered by the German physicist W. C. Röntgen in 1895 when he accidentally noticed that fluorescent materials showed a faint glow when placed near a cathode-ray tube powered by a high voltage induction coil. Although others had observed similar phenomena earlier, Röntgen was the first one who concluded that he had found “a new kind of rays”. He called them “X-rays” (X = unknown) ...

The Naked Truth or the Shadow of Doubt? X-Rays and the Problematic of Transparency

Late into the evening of 8 November 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a physics professor at the University of Würzburg, made a discovery that would revolutionize science almost overnight. While conducting experiments with cathode rays in his laboratory, he remarked a peculiar glow with highly unusual properties emanating from a nearby fluorescent screen, the source of which he could not identify. T...

Seeing the heart; the success story of cardiac imaging.

On 29 January 1896 a large audience at the Würzburg Physical Medical Society attended a lecture and a demonstration of a new kind of ray produced by electrical discharges from an induction coil through a Hittorf–Crookes tube. The demonstrator was Wilhelm Konrad Röntgen (1845–1923), professor of physics, who, a few months earlier, had discovered in his modest laboratory in Elberfeld, that these ...

Study on effect of detector type in estimating buildup factor of gamma-rays by monte carlo simulation based on variance reduction

This paper presents the study on the effect of detector type in estimating gamma rays buildup factor. In this regard, the flux buildup factors of gamma rays emitted by an isotropic point 60Co source in mean energy 1.253 MeV was evaluated after passing through the Pb, W, Zn, and Ti sample in thickness of 1-5 cm by MCNPX. Four common detector types in simulation of measurement was defined to esti...
